How to Measure Your Room for New Flooring

Getting accurate measurements is the foundation of any successful flooring project. Whether you’re planning to install carpet, laminate, vinyl or LVT, proper measuring ensures you order the right amount of material and avoid costly mistakes.

The Basic Measuring Process
Start by sketching your room from above, noting any doorways, alcoves, fireplaces or built-in furniture. For rectangular rooms, measure the length and width at the widest points, including any recessed areas. Remember to measure into doorways where the flooring will extend.

Essential Measuring Tips
Always add 10 centimetres to both your length and width measurements. This extra allowance accounts for wall irregularities and cutting requirements during fitting. Many homes have walls that are not perfectly straight, so taking measurements at several points and using the largest figures ensures adequate coverage.

Dealing with Irregular Shapes
L-shaped halls and unusual room layouts require breaking the space into rectangles. Calculate each section separately, then add the totals together. While this approach might create more waste, it often eliminates joins that could affect the finished appearance.
